Convocation Notes

Convocation Notes: June 14, 2022

OLD BUSINESS

2-of land restrictions

Beasts

Got more feedback
– watching groups, there is a feeling of “what is PAC’s role in the OS community?”
– started from the 2-of format discussion – seems like it would make us a joke format
– things like unrestricted recall and plague rats are fun, but not huge deals
– going to 2-of breaks a common expectation about 4-of and 1-of
– who even plays PAC – Spawners had a major event and didn’t play PAC rules
– what things can you do to keep it fresh?
– maybe PAC should focus more on having fun events, and less on the rule set
– should we capitalize on the great events PAC clubs have? Rivalry stuff
– have event-based weird rules
– no shortage of creativity in rules in PAC, without needing the “main” ruleset to be weird
– center it on events and people and rivalry, not rules and if you have enough people to vote or not
– feedback on 2-of was mixed
– some people thought it would be great to mix it up
– others would rather leave PAC before going to 2-of
– already a lot of confusion
– messaging about what PAC is for on the website – we want to create events that people want to play
– people will know what 2PAC is if we market it that way – especially if we have an event about it

Horde

– what if it’s a special variant format called 2PAC?
– why do we have a PAC ruleset if it’s basically the same thing as EC?
– ruleset choice is up to the TO
– no one should care if some PAC club wants to play some other format
– think about things that would make people want to join PAC – what value do they get out of it?
– one concern coming out of covid: lots of people are seeing how much the cards are worth, selling out, and moving on
– don’t want a gradual bleed off as players drift away from the format
– want to keep in mind what we can do to make sure people stay engaged in the format
– need to keep momentum going – hard to get people into the swing of things in Portland again
– want to create the environment where people want to stay engaged
– about other cards, 2-of or unrestricted channel seems fine – has been tested like 100 times
– groups: talk about it, maybe try it, see if people can break it

Trolls

– similar feedback about 2PAC – mixed opinions
– propose to make it a variant format, 2PAC, but not change the main format
– agree about all the discussion about rivalry aspects – seems more important
– patches for annual winner

MOTION

Beasts: make 2PAC an official variant, but not publicize it yet – do it in association with an event
– Horde – offer to host 2023 event with 2PAC rules
– Second – Horde
– Beasts: aye
– Horde: aye
– Trolls: aye

Rivalry

Beasts proposed text

4 “Majors” annually

  1. Seattle Troll Event
  2. Las Vegas GP/event
  3. The Risk
  4. Chalice

Each Major has a single elim side event to be set by PAC Voting Members (could be using the event decks, regular PAC deck, Beast Singleton, Type 1.5, A40, 2HG, etc)

Points are earned two ways:
A) 4 points for 1st, 3 points for 2nd, so on, etc
B) Each member of your club in the top 8 for the main tournament or spice receives 1 point

At beginning of each calendar year, each club will choose a charity to represent. The leading club after each Major will have all other clubs donate $100 each to their representative charity.

At the last event of the year, the club with the most points is crowned PAC OS Conference champion and holds the honor & trophy for year

Beasts

– patches seem like a good thing
– charity donation for winner club
– some details to work out – don’t want same few people to always represent their club
– awards
– patch for club of the year
– most points stanley cup
– best player special shoes
– may need to rewrite by-laws around the membership/rivalry changes
– maybe rewrite by-laws to focus more on players and less on rules
– what happens to PAC rules? maybe just leave them, not likely to need to change anything
– PAC as a rule set happened because some things in EC that needed to change didn’t change – then EC changed – so less of a concern
– maybe just have a simpler way to change
– when is target?
– tie league to calendar year
– special kickoff one-off event at Chalice this year

Horde

– could have an end-of-season vote – someone from each club votes, can’t vote for yourself
– award for something more than just winning
– club of the year
– who raised the most money
– who had the coolest event
– player of the year
– spice of the year
– winning club gets a fir tree pin – different color per year – people know what they are for
– people don’t make much distinction among formats – EC=4 strip, ATL=1 strip
– keeping PAC as a ruleset lets us retain flexibility if we do need to make a B&R change, but not super important now

Trolls

– Maybe hosting a major makes you a PAC club
– Beasts:
– could lead to a lot of events – just a few more clubs would lead to a whole lot of majors
– maybe voting is still on club size, but being in the rivalry just requires you to send people to them
– maybe rotate venues

ACTION ITEM: Shawn to iterate on how rivalry works
ACTION ITEM: Jeremy to iterate on how by-laws would change

NEW BUSINESS

2023 scheduling

Horde

– we should coordinate schedules for these events
– DFB keeps a central calendar
– Maybe will try late Jan or early Feb

Trolls

– looking at April, early May, or June 24 – call with venue next week
– hoping for April
– Lobstercon is looking at June 3
– Risk was in May this year, they don’t know when it will be next year

Beasts

– Chalice will be same weekend (Indigenous Peoples’/Columbus day)
– For this year, Chalice invites coming out next week
